“Bac Kim Thang” (internationally known as “Home Sweet Home”) was produced by ProductionQ and is the first Vietnamese psychological horror film to be selected for participation in the Busan Film Festival – the largest film festival in Asia and the fifth largest in the world. Despite being made by a team of young people without any well-known box office stars, the film surprised audiences by earning a revenue of nearly 30 billion VND in just three days of release, becoming the Vietnamese film with the highest opening revenue of the Halloween season of all time (as of 2019). “Bac Kim Thang” eventually earned a total revenue of 43 billion VND (1.88 million USD), becoming the third highest-grossing Vietnamese horror film in 2019..
TAKING THE POWER OF CATEGORIES: THOUGHT-PROVOKING THEORY
As a Psychological Thriller – Psychological Suspense film, “Bac Kim Thang” was built to reflect the concept of “respecting men and disrespecting women”, a long-standing belief in Asian perception, particularly in rural areas of Vietnam. In addition to the usual media materials, the film utilized metaphorical images and symbolic details from the song “Bac Kim Thang” to satisfy audiences who enjoy discovering and experiencing horror and detective products.
