On February 14, the total box office revenue in Vietnam reached over 12 billion VND, with “Bay Ngot Ngao” and “Chuyen Ma Gan Nha” leading the rankings.
Valentine’s Day this year saw a competition between two movies: “Bay Ngot Ngao” (Dinh Ha Uyen Thu) and “Chuyen Ma Gan Nha” (Tran Huu Tan). Though the two films belong to different genres, both have garnered attention from the audience. While “Chuyen Ma Gan Nha” (Vietnamese Horror Story) had a successful weekend with a box office revenue of over 40 billion VND and dominated in terms of showtimes and ticket sales, the situation changed on February 14. “Bay Ngot Ngao” took the lead with nearly 80,000 tickets sold and a box office revenue of almost 5 billion VND. According to experts, this is understandable as Dinh Ha Uyen Thu’s movie, which explores love and friendship, is a suitable choice for the romantic atmosphere and is easily appealing to the young audience.

Meanwhile, Tran Huu Tan’s horror film “Chuyen Ma Gan Nha” is still following closely behind “Bay Ngot Ngao” with over 2,600 showtimes and a box office revenue of over 4 billion VND. According to Box Office statistics, the total box office revenue on Valentine’s Day was over 12 billion VND. After 4 days of release, “Chuyen Ma Gan Nha” has earned nearly 45 billion VND, surpassing “Bay Ngot Ngao”. Film critic Nguyen Phong Viet told Zing that the success of “Chuyen Ma Gan Nha” brings positive and optimistic signals for the film market. He predicts that with a relatively stable number of showtimes at over 2,500 per day, the movie has the potential to earn around 70 billion VND until it leaves theaters. “The film has a huge advantage as cinema chains have almost fully opened since its release. In addition, the use of folk horror stories as a message in the movie is a boost to the curiosity of audiences who want to go to the cinema. The film’s success will also support producers in upcoming projects and help the cinema system recover after two years of struggling due to the pandemic,” he said.
